Ever looked at the timeless beauty of the likes of Gwen Stefani, Gabrielle Union, Pharell Williams, Paul Rudd and many others and wondered how they were able to maintain that youthful glow? Well, this article is for you. You need to preserve what you’ve got; as such, here are 7 tips on how to look younger naturally and maintain your looks over time.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN
Sunscreen is very important! I cannot stress this enough. Studies have shown that direct sun exposure can result in premature ageing, skin cancer and other skin-related conditions. You need to be protected from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays and trust me, sunscreen does just that. By the way, you should never use a sunscreen with SPF higher than 50.
WATCH WHAT YOU EAT
What you put in your plate affects what you see in the mirror. Avoid deep-fried foods and processed meats as they cause inflammation in the body. Also, avoid eating too much sugar and baked goods which damage your skin’s collagen and result in wrinkles. Add citrus fruits, berries and avocado to your diet as these are proven to give a glowing complexion. You can try a sugar- free diet for a year and be amazed at the results. You can also have a fully vegetarian diet; but for meat lovers like me, this isn’t an option.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
Making sure you stay hydrated is necessary for younger-looking skin. Drinking enough water increases elasticity in the skin as it stays moisturized for longer. Intake of water increases blood flow to the skin thus improving skin tone. Water also helps flush toxins from your body, so swig down that whole bottle of water to balance the oil and water content on your skin and prevent acne.
HAVE A GOOD SKINCARE ROUTINE
To look young, you need to get a good skincare routine and be consistent with it. Your routine should consist of a cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, spot treatment, moisturizer and sunscreen; with you exfoliating at most twice a week. I am Neutrogena obsessed; my skincare routine is full of their products! There are other quality yet affordable skincare brands out there too, such as The Ordinary, Mario Badescu, CeraVe among others.
Keeping up a regular fitness routine can help your skin’s overall health. Exercise improves blood circulation and delivers oxygen and nutrients to your skin which keeps the skin healthy and also gives it a post-workout glow. Exercising doesn’t necessarily mean gyming to have that super-athletic body. A simple jog or walk in the morning really goes a long way to improve blood circulation and keep the skin healthy.
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP
It’s common knowledge that most of us don’t get enough sleep; which is quite unfortunate as the skin is best able to repair and regenerate itself at night. Good night sleep is key to good skin health. It gives your skin ample time to recover from damage and inflammation and makes you refreshed. You must ensure that you get a whole 8 hours of sleep.
AVOID SMOKING AND DRINKING
It is mandatory to avoid smoking and drinking in order to maintain that youthful look. It is proven that cigarette smoke damages the collagen in the skin, resulting in the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin. Too much alcohol also dehydrates the skin and causes wrinkles and pores to be more visible while also causing premature skin ageing. All these effects can be avoided if you just stay away from smoking and drinking.
So, there you have it loves. These simple tips are really powerful in ensuring you maintain that youthful glow and age gracefully. Ageing is inevitable, but if you implement these sure tips, you will look good, feel good, and look forward to each new year.
